ABOUT AMS-IX
AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet Exchanges worldwide, interconnecting over 460 ISP’s, Carriers, content providers and other Internet-related businesses. AMS-IX builds its services around a state of the art Metro Ethernet network based on MPLS/VPLS, switching around 1.5 Tb/s at peak times. In order to support the large number of high bandwidth ports to which customers connect, AMS-IX works with the latest developments in switch/router hardware and gives leading input to manufacturers for the development of next generation (for example 100GE) equipment.
Next to the exchange platform in Amsterdam, AMS-IX also operates a Exchange in Hong Kong and a small Exchange on Curacao.
ABOUT YOUR DEPARTMENT
AMS-IX is currently operated by a team of 36 people of which roughly half is technical staff. Of these, 6 people form the NOC, which is responsible for the day to day operations of the platform.
The AMS-IX NOC is located at the AMS-IX offices in the centre of Amsterdam. Besides office space there is an extensive lab facility at this location to help with developments, testing and debugging.
ABOUT THE POSITION
As an AMS-IX NOC engineer you will be part of a team of engineers who work closely together on the day to day operations of the Ethernet switching platform, designing and implementing solutions for new services, platform extensions and upgrades. After the initial trial period you will participate in the 24/7 NOC service. Currently the AMS-IX NOC offers full operational support during Amsterdam and Hong Kong office hours and standby support for emergencies only outside these hours. With the expansion of services to other timezones and the increasing amount of customers from all over the world AMS-IX Amsterdam will soon be expanding the service hours of the NOC to full 24 hours.
ABOUT YOU
- You have a sound IT background in both education and experience, specifically in the area of networking.
- You have experience with the management of MPLS, Ethernet and IP networks and understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects and protocols that are required to build and mainttain these networks. Knowledge of VPLS is a plus.
- You have a good understanding of routing protocols and have practical experience with configuring BGP.
- You have a good insight in the structure and relations that make up the internet.
- You know your way around in a Linux/Unix enviroment, can work with shell scripts and have some understanding of Perl.
- You are open minded, eager to learn, able to work in a small team of highly skilled professionals and stress-resistant. Above this you are willing to participate in the call duty system.
- You have good communications skills, your English is fluent (both spoken and written). Speaking and/or understanding at least basic Dutch is a plus. You are willing and able to give subject matter presentations to various audiences.
- You have a driver's licence for a car.
