Established in the early 1990s, AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) is a neutral, non-profit and independent Internet Exchange based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Internet traffic at AMS-IX has a peak of 5.5 Terabits per second (Tbps) and it interconnects more than 900 IP networks, making it the world’s largest Internet Exchange.

The AMS-IX platform provides IP interconnection and peering services of a guaranteed high quality for all types of IP traffic, irrespective whether this is traditional data, Voice over IP, mobile Internet traffic or video. By means of peering, these networks can provide their end users (both consumers as well as companies) with stable, fast and cost-efficient Internet services. 

AMS-IX also manages the world’s first mobile peering points: The Global Roaming Exchange (GRX), the Mobile Data Exchange (MDX) and the Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) interconnection points. Job description

The Business Development Manager reports to the Sales Director and is responsible for identifying, developing and closing business opportunities with new and existing customers, and generally manage the business relationship. Additionally, business development for new services like cloud is part of the job profile. The organisation has a very international focus, built on a strong Dutch base and for the interaction with the existing customers a candidate in the area of the Netherlands is preferred. You will be the face representing AMS-IX at many industry functions worldwide and as such required to travel extensively. 


Key responsibilities

The main objective of the role is to achieve a predefined target for sales to existing and new customers, both with respect to quantity (volume of orders) as well as to quality (type of customer). The role is largely autonomous, so self-motivation, independent personal development and pioneer-mentality are important for success. The activities are amongst others:
  • Develop and execute the sales plan together with the team, 
  • Focus on initiating and building business relationships, plus expanding business within the existing customer base of ISP’s, telco’s, content providers, hosting providers, social and broadcasting media and other Internet companies, 
  • Develop the business around the cloud connectivity, 
  • Develop and manage an ongoing pipeline of potential opportunities,
  • Define and implement account development plans for certain target accounts/segments,
  • Collaborate with the marketing team and the Product Manager to develop sales materials, customer communication, initiate customer events, 
  • Work with the other departments to enable smooth operations of all customer interaction, such as customer administration, back-office and customer service aspects, as well as invoicing and technical operations,
  • Facilitate the development and provide input with regards to the need for sales tools, techniques and systems (i.e. CRM),
  • Report to the Sales Director on pipeline and progress. 

Profile

  • Mid-career level with about 5-7 years working experience in a commercial role in a ICT or technical environment,
  • Minimum bachelor graduate (HBO+), either a business/economic or technically relevant study (in the latter case demonstrated sales experience is key), 
  • Demonstrated successful experience in commercial relationship management and increasing sales results,
  • Understanding of the (mobile) Internet, and (wholesale) IP infrastructure/cloud market is a pre, 
  • A network of relevant contacts within the Internet/mobile industry would be considered a strong asset,
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills,
  • Strong customer focus,
  • Eager and inquiring mind,
  • A driven, extrovert personality, 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiastic team-player, 
  • Ability to express and understand complex issues both verbally and in writing in English is required, other languages are a plus.
