2019 was an eventful year for AMS-IX. We reached a new record-breaking peak traffic of 7 Terabits per second on our peering platform (traffic corresponding to the simultaneous transmission of up to 280.000 videos in 4k HD quality). In addition, our mobile GRX interconnection platform reached a peak traffic of 155,5 Gigabit per second. Our total yearly traffic volume rose 17% to 16,92 Exabyte (EB) and the number of 100G active ports grew by 19%. This growth in traffic volume underlines the fact that AMS-IX Amsterdam continues to be one of the leading Internet Exchanges in the world and a digital gateway to Europe.
The number of connected networks at AMS-IX Amsterdam has risen to 879. 60% of all the new members and customers came from outside the Netherlands. Our partners contributed significantly to this growth, as over 60% of our new customers and members came from resellers.
AMS-IX currently runs six independent internet exchanges: Amsterdam, Chicago, Bay Area, Caribbean, Mumbai and Hong Kong. AMS-IX now connects more than a thousand networks globally and continues to expand in new strategic locations.
CTO Henk Steenman comments: “The demand for bandwidth keeps on increasing, which is clearly shown in the rise of internet traffic volume and new reached internet peaks. In addition, AMS-IX increased its total capacity in the Amsterdam metro to 34,6 Terabits per second. In the coming years, we will continue to add new networks to our platforms, manage capacity growth and expand our global footprint.”
