September 18, 2024

On the evening of Tuesday, September 17th, AMS-IX set a new internet traffic record, reaching 13 Tbit per second.

As the world economy and societies are digitalizing at a fast pace, the amount of internet traffic which is being exchanged on the AMS-IX platform is ever growing. The new traffic peak of 13 Tbps was clocked on 17 September, around 22:30 CET, when traditionally many people are at home streaming, studying or gaming. The internet plays a significant part in our daily lives, enabling people to work, study and video stream at any place at any time.

The importance of the internet in our society is reflected in the continuous growth of the AMS-IX platform, with new peering parties connecting to the platform and others upgrading their port capacity. This growth is the major driver of the traffic peak reached yesterday. Several peering and reselling partners have upgraded to 400 GB ports while recently in Amsterdam, telecom service provider Odido even upgraded their connection to a total of 2.4Tb capacity, to meet ever growing demand.

“Internet traffic continues to grow worldwide. It is a proud moment to see AMS-IX, as one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, plays such a pivotal role in worldwide connectivity. Reaching a new traffic peak at 13Tbps is a milestone for our platform and for internet society as a whole and the Dutch digital society in particular. Thanks to all the connected members and customers, who trust in our network and services, we can continue connecting people and societies.” - Peter van Burgel - CEO of AMS-IX

13 Terabit per second

13 Terabit per second is an astronomical amount of data traffic. It corresponds to, for example:

  • 65 million people playing Minecraft simultaneously, or
  • 58.56 million people simultaneously playing Fortnite, or
  • 520,000 people simultaneously watching 4K video streams, or
  • 6.97 million people watching TikTok videos simultaneously.
